Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has confirmed he is in talks over a new contract at Old Trafford, expressing confidence that an agreement will be reached as the club prepares for a pivotal summer.
The 33-year-old centre-back, whose current deal is nearing its expiry, revealed that discussions with the club are ongoing and progressing positively. Speaking while on international duty, Maguire suggested a resolution could come “sooner rather than later,” signalling optimism on both sides.
Reports indicate Manchester United are open to extending his stay, potentially on a short-term deal, as they weigh up experience versus long-term squad planning. Maguire himself has made it clear he wants assurances over his role, stressing he would only remain if he continues to play an important part in the team.
“I think there’s been talks,” Maguire said of his Manchester United future. “I think we’ll reach an agreement where it’s best for the club and myself.
“What that agreement is, I’m sure you’ll find out over the next few weeks. But, yeah, I think it’ll get sorted sooner rather than later, whether I stay or leave. But I think it will – it should – get sorted pretty soon.”
Put to him United appears to be in his heart, he said: “Yeah, I love this club. But it’s got to be right for myself, it’s got to be right for the club as well.
“I don’t want to be staying on a sentimental value. I want to be staying because I want to be there and the club want me to drive the club forward still, and they feel like I’ve got a big part to play in it.
“And if that’s the case, then I’m sure we’ll sit down and reach something.”
Why United Should Look to the Future
Maguire’s resurgence deserves recognition. His professionalism, leadership, and ability to respond to criticism have been impressive, and he remains a reliable option in the right system.
However, sentiment should not dictate strategy.
At 33, Maguire is entering the latter stages of his career. While he can still perform at a high level, Manchester United’s long-term ambitions require a defensive rebuild built around younger, more mobile players. The modern Premier League demands pace, recovery speed, and adaptability—areas where younger defenders naturally have an advantage.
Manchester United have repeatedly struggled with defensive transitions, particularly against fast, high-pressing opponents. Investing in a fresher profile—someone entering their prime rather than exiting it—would better align with the club’s need to evolve.
There is also a squad-building argument. Offering a new deal to Maguire, even on reduced terms, potentially delays a necessary refresh. United have already leaned heavily on experienced players in recent seasons, and a shift toward youth and athleticism feels overdue.
This does not mean Maguire has no role. As a squad player or mentor, his presence could still be valuable. But as a central pillar of the defence going forward, the club should be aiming higher—and younger.
