Manchester United have been linked with a sensational move for Cole Palmer after former Chelsea star Joe Cole suggested the England international could consider leaving Stamford Bridge amid growing frustration at the club.
Speaking in recent media appearances, Cole delivered a scathing assessment of Chelsea’s current direction, criticising the ownership model and warning that top players may begin to look elsewhere. He claimed that players are becoming “frustrated” and hinted that someone of Palmer’s quality could start questioning his future.
‘You can say what you like about the Roman Abramovich era but it was built with one thing in mind and that was to win trophies,’ Cole said on The Dressing Room podcast. It was pitch from the football pitch outwards. Under Roman Chelsea wanted the best managers we could get and the best players we could get. The idea was to try and win every game and win every trophy.
‘When that didn’t happen we’re going to change the manager, which can be chaotic, and we’re going to change players. We’re selling them if we have to.
‘You all knew what was going on, right? Now the new ownership group has come in and they spent a lot of money initially, wasted a lot of money, in my opinion, on not getting the right players in through the door.”
‘Over £1billion has been spent on the premise that these lads will develop and become players, and some of them will become great players. But the Chelsea fans are upset because they don’t feel like they’re competing, and they’re not really.
‘You’re not buying players to win games of football, you’re buying players as an asset and I don’t think that ever works.
Asked about players potentially looking elsewhere given the situation at CHELSEA, Cole added: ‘They’re frustrated. And you get into that position now, where the best players are going to start going…
‘If you’re Cole Palmer you’re thinking, I could go and play anywhere in the world. Like, what’s happening here? Do you know what I mean?’
Palmer, widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking talents, has been central to Chelsea since his move from Manchester City in 2023. However, a turbulent campaign marked by managerial changes and inconsistent results has fuelled speculation about dressing room morale.
Reports also indicate that Manchester United are among the clubs monitoring the situation, with long-standing admiration for the playmaker. His Manchester roots and previous links to the club only add to the intrigue surrounding a potential move.
Despite the noise, any deal would be extremely complicated. Palmer is tied to a long-term contract—reportedly running until 2033—placing Chelsea in a position of strength. The club have consistently maintained that he is a cornerstone of their project, with manager Liam Rosenior previously insisting the player is “very happy” and effectively untouchable.
Could a Move to United Really Happen?
From a footballing perspective, Palmer would be a near-perfect fit. United have often lacked creativity and composure in the final third, and his ability to operate between the lines, carry the ball, and deliver decisive moments would immediately elevate their attack. His versatility—capable of playing centrally or wide—would also give United tactical flexibility.
There is also a narrative pull. As a Manchester-born player who came through the system at Manchester City, a move across the city divide to United would carry significant storyline weight.
However, the obstacles are substantial. CHELSEA have no incentive to sell their best player, particularly to a direct rival. The length of his contract removes any leverage from the player’s side, and the transfer fee required would likely be prohibitive given Manchester United’s other squad priorities.
