Manchester United have encountered a significant blow in their hunt for a new manager, with shortlisted candidate Luis Enrique now anticipated to pen a fresh contract at Paris Saint‐Germain. According to the i paper, club president Nasser Al‐Khelaifi is keen to prolong Enrique's agreement beyond 2027 - a development that leaves Michael Carrick 'closing in' on the full‐time job.
It's reported that the capture of Spanish wonderkid Dro Fernandez, snapped up ahead of several elite European clubs, was deployed as a 'sweetener' to convince Enrique that PSG are wholly devoted to his long‐term vision. United are believed to have shortlisted Enrique, with interest said to come from chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.
Last week, Enrique was questioned about his future during a brief exchange with a supporter. The video, which went viral online, suggests the 55‐year‐old wishes to remain put.
In the video, Enrique halted his car to sign autographs for supporters when one stated: "I hope you stay with PSG for a long time." The Spanish manager's reply was revealing as he said: "Me too."
The same supporter then raised United, asking: "Not at United though?" Enrique simply laughed off the suggestion.
The report also suggests that Carrick is now 'closing in' on securing the permanent manager's position as a consequence, with Ineos believed to be favouring offering him the full-time role at Old Trafford - though initially on a 'short-term basis.' The former midfielder has made a strong impression since assuming control in January, suffering just one defeat and steering United up to third in the Premier League table.

Champions League qualification is becoming an increasingly realistic possibility for next season, and should United achieve this, it would be challenging to dismiss Carrick's claims. While no announcement is anticipated before the campaign concludes, it's evident that should the club opt to pursue a different route, Enrique may already be unavailable.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has surfaced as another candidate for the Old Trafford position. His deal is set to run out this summer following almost three years at the helm on the south coast.
Iraola has established an impressive standing, steering Bournemouth to 12th and ninth in his opening two Premier League campaigns. Despite losing several key figures in the summer, he has the Cherries on track for another solid conclusion - presently positioned 13th and without defeat in 11 fixtures.
