£69m Uruguay international informs Chelsea of desire to make England move

Sporting CP defender Maxi Araújo is preparing to face England national football team with Uruguay, but reports suggest he has yet to signal any firm intention of moving to the Premier League despite growing interest from Chelsea.

The 26-year-old has emerged as a key transfer target for several English clubs, with Chelsea among those to have made contact over a potential summer deal. Scouts from the west London side have reportedly monitored Araújo closely in recent weeks, as they assess options to strengthen their left flank.

Interest in the Uruguay international is not limited to CHELSEA. Rivals including Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are also tracking his progress, setting up a potential three-way battle for his signature. Sporting are understood to be in a strong negotiating position, with Araújo’s contract containing a release clause of around €80 million (£69m).

Despite that growing attention, the player himself has struck a more cautious tone. Speaking while on international duty, Araújo expressed excitement about playing in England for the first time but stopped short of committing his future to a move there. He described the upcoming match as “a huge opportunity” and hinted it could be “the first of many” visits, comments that have been interpreted as openness rather than intent.

Speaking to Uruguayan outlet El Espectador Deportes, he made his feelings clear about playing in England: “It will be my first time in England, let it be the first of many. It will be incredible, a huge opportunity and I will make the most of it.”

That distinction is significant. While clubs such as CHELSEA have taken concrete steps by initiating contact, there is currently no indication that Araújo has communicated a desire to leave Sporting or prioritise a switch to Stamford Bridge.

Araújo’s performances in Portugal have made him one of the most sought-after full-backs in Europe. Operating primarily on the left, he has contributed consistently in attack while also demonstrating tactical flexibility, with the ability to play as a wing-back or further forward. His form has only strengthened his appeal to Premier League sides seeking dynamic, multi-functional defenders.

For now, however, the focus remains on international duty. Uruguay’s fixture against England—set to be played in London—offers Araújo a chance to showcase his qualities directly in front of potential suitors.

With no formal bids yet submitted and the player keeping his options open, the situation remains fluid. CHELSEA’s interest is clear, but until Araújo signals a willingness to move, any deal is likely to remain at an exploratory stage.

As the summer window approaches, his performances on both international and club stages could prove decisive in determining whether interest from Stamford Bridge develops into a concrete transfer pursuit.
