The mother of former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has died. Marie Keane passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved ones at Marymount Hospice in her son's home town of Cork in the Republic of Ireland earlier today, her family said.

A resident of Rathpeacon, just north of Cork city, Marie is predeceased by her husband, Maurice, who passed away in 2019, as well as her brother, Pat, her niece, Estella, and her nephew, Thomas, CorkBeo reports.

Marie will be dearly missed by her children, Roy, Denis, Johnson, Pat and Hilary, her loving siblings, Ina, Annette, Josephine, Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a wide circle of family, friends and neighbours, the title reports.

Roy was known to be very close to his mother, often travelling home to Leeside to visit. During one such visit a few years ago, the star shared a photo with his mother, referring to her as 'the only boss he'd listen to'.

During an episode of Stick to Football released last year, the Cork-born star became emotional after coming across a picture of his parents while going through his career memorabilia. The Manchester United legend was comforted by fellow hosts Ian Wright, Jill Scott, and Gary Neville, with Keane's close family bond touching the hearts of many fans.

The Keanes are a tight-knit family, and the passing of his father, Maurice or 'Mossie' as he was better known, had a profound impact on Roy. Maurice suffered a stroke in 2018 and passed away in the hospital the following year, reported CorkBeo.

Marie and Mossie were extremely supportive of Roy's footballing ambitions growing up, and the couple moved from their native Mayfield out to Rathpecon after Roy purchased a house for them following his success in the Premier League. It's expected that many, both from Rathpeacon and Cork city, will attend the visitation and pay their respects.

The visitation will take place at O'Connor Bros. Funeral Home, North Gate Bridge on Monday, March 30, between 6 and 7 pm It will be followed by a requiem mass on Tuesday, March 31, at 11.00 am in the Church of the Resurrection, Farranree. The family has requested donations to Marymount Hospice in lieu of flowers.
