Roy Keane's mother, Marie, has sadly died. It was confirmed on Friday that she had 'passed away peacefully' while 'surrounded by loved ones' at Marymount Hospice.

A notice on confirmed the news, saying she will be "sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, her great neighbours and friends."

Roy was known to be close to his mother and often travelled home to see her. He shared a photograph of the two of them on one such visit, quipping she was 'the only boss he'd listen to.'

The legend became emotional during an episode of the Stick to podcast last year when he came across a picture of his parents while going through mementos from his illustrious playing career.

Rockmount AFC, the schoolboy club Keane played for as a youngster in Cork, were among the first to offer their condolences.
