Former Washington Commanders standout quarterback Robert Griffin III just announced some major career news. The former Baylor star and consensus 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Griffin was sensational in his rookie season in Washington, but his professional career took a devastating turn when he suffered a brutal leg injury. Griffin was never quite the same after that.

Though Griffin’s injury forced the Commanders to turn elsewhere at quarterback, they settled on another passer drafted later in the same draft Washington took Griffin. Kirk Cousins began his career in Washington and had some success for the Commanders, later signing a big free agent deal with the Vikings.

Now, the Commanders have Jayden Daniels under center — the most dynamic and exciting player Washington’s had at that position since Griffin in his rookie season. Griffin himself just announced big career news.

On Thursday, the Commanders’ Griffin made a significant career announcement. Flag football is currently making all the headlines, as the US National Team thoroughly and convincingly defeated two teams comprised of NFL players, to the surprise of many fans. Though flag football is a different sport, some expected the NFL players — supposed to be the most skilled and athletic football players in the world, flag or no — to roll to a win. If anything, the opposite happened.

One former NFL star is getting another look in the flag football world, however. That would be Griffin. After spending three years in Washington, Griffin spent a year in Cleveland then finished out his career in Baltimore, retiring in 2020. Since then, he’s gone into sports broadcasting, but it seems the former Commanders star isn’t done on the field just yet.

Griffin was invited to a Team USA flag football camp to try out for the national team. He was one of 24 players invited to said camp, and the former Commanders first-round pick is excited for his new opportunity.

“God’s plan,” he wrote on X/Twitter as he shared the announcement. “The work is just getting started. Excited to work with my new teammates. USA! USA! USA!”

The Washington Commanders Have a Lot of Options With Their First-Round Pick

Picking at No. 7 overall in the first round, the Commanders have a lot of options with that selection. Ohio State S Caleb Downs is commonly mocked to Washington in that spot, but there are other directions they could go too. It’s a deep defensive line class, and players such as Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. or Texas Tech’s David Bailey would significantly improve the talent in Washington’s trenches.

Of course, the Commanders could look to go offense too. There are sure to be some good receivers on the board when they’re picking, perhaps Ohio State’s Carnell Tate or Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson. Perhaps they’ll even be able to draft Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love….
