Former Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has now decided on his ultimate midfield trio, snubbing one notable name from the list.
Previously lining out for Everton and the Red Devils, the ex-striker has been a bitter rival of Liverpool’s for many years.
However, even Rooney knows that the Reds have previously had a top-class midfielder in Steven Gerrard.

Steven Gerrard part of Wayne Rooney’s ultimate midfield
Recently, the Englishman expressed his stance that he would have loved to see Gerrard at Man Utd.
That, of course, never happened, but the Liverpool hero has still managed to join the former Manchester United aces in his new ultimate midfield.
Speaking to BBC Sport, the legendary centre-forward was asked to name his ultimate midfield.
He went for a three-man split and decided that Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Gerrard were all worthy inclusions ahead of Frank Lampard.

Explaining his reasoning, Rooney said: “In the three in midfield, I’d go Scholes, Carrick and Gerrard.
“I was going to go Lampard instead of Carrick, but just having the balance of it, Stevie could be the one to go forward and it gives you a better balance.”

Steven Gerrard had high praise for Wayne Rooney ahead of former Liverpool players
While the pair never lined up together at club level, they were part of England’s ‘golden generation’.
That also included Rio Ferdinand and when appearing on his podcast in 2025, the ex-centre-back asked the Liverpool legend to name his best teammate from his time with the Three Lions.
He could have chosen Reds stars like Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen, but instead picked Rooney.
Gerrard said: “Wayne Rooney is the best player I’ve played with for England, hands down. He can do so many things.
“I don’t see Wayne as a No.9 or a No.10; I see him as an all-round attacker. He could occupy a back four on his own.”
