The San Francisco 49ers did plenty this offseason to look like a serious contender again.
They added proven help, brought in legitimate talent on both sides of the ball and gave fans reasons to believe 2025’s injury-ravaged season does not have to define what comes next. On paper, that is the easy story.
The harder one is this: the 49ers still seem to rise and fall with Christian McCaffrey.
That is what makes him both the engine of the operation and, in some ways, the biggest fear attached to San Francisco’s 2026 outlook.
A recent offseason breakdown of the 49ers by The Athletic pointed to the team’s additions, including wide receiver Mike Evans and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, while also noting the obvious concern tied to McCaffrey’s place in the offense. He remains the centerpiece, but he is also getting older, and after everything San Francisco went through with injuries in 2025, that is not a small issue to brush aside.
The 49ers Improved, but the Core Question Never Changed
This is what makes the 49ers such an interesting team heading into the season.
They clearly look better equipped than they were during a 2025 campaign that was heavily shaped by injuries. It is reasonable to believe San Francisco should be better simply because it would be difficult for the health situation to be that disastrous again.
But better luck alone does not erase the franchise’s biggest pressure point.
McCaffrey is not just another important veteran. He is the player who helps tie the entire offense together. He changes how defenses line up, gives the passing game an answer underneath, and remains one of the few players in the league capable of making structure and chaos work at the same time.
That is exactly why the concern hits so hard.
If the 49ers still need McCaffrey to be McCaffrey at full force for their offense to hit its highest level, then they are still building a contender around one of the most demanding roles in football: an aging star running back asked to be the heartbeat of everything.
This Is About Dependency More Than Doubt
This is not really an argument against McCaffrey as a player.
When healthy, he is still one of the most complete offensive weapons in the NFL. Few players can affect a game the way he can, and few can tilt defensive game plans before the ball is even snapped.
The more uncomfortable question for San Francisco is whether the offense still depends on him too much.
That is a very different conversation than asking whether he is still elite.
A team can believe a player is special and still worry that the burden is too large. In fact, that is probably the real tension around the 49ers right now. They have added talent, but their clearest path to looking like a true Super Bowl threat still runs straight through McCaffrey being available, explosive and durable over the long haul.
That is asking a lot of any running back. It becomes even riskier when age starts entering the discussion, even in a subtle way.
Why This Matters More After 2025
The timing is what gives this angle real weight.
Had the 49ers come off a relatively normal season, maybe this would register as background noise. But after 2025, when injuries tore through the roster and undercut so much of what San Francisco wanted to be, it is harder to shrug off any health-related concern involving the team’s most important skill player.
That is especially true because the 49ers are not selling patience. Their offseason moves look like the actions of a team trying to win now.
That raises the stakes around McCaffrey rather than lowering them.
If he stays healthy and productive, the 49ers have enough around him to look dangerous again. If there is another year where he cannot be the same force or the offense has to adjust on the fly without him, the optimism around the roster starts to feel much shakier.
That is why this is the 49ers’ most emotionally charged question heading into the season. Not because anyone doubts what McCaffrey has been, but because San Francisco may still need him to be everything it has relied on before.
And that is a thrilling idea when it works.
It is also the one part of the 49ers’ 2026 picture that should make fans the most uneasy.
