Red Sox Prospect Admits He Witnessed Club Workshopping New Hit Celebration

The Boston Red Sox introduced a new extra-base hit celebration during their Opening Day victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Marcelo Mayer, who would eventually come around to score the game-winning run, sliced a double into the left-field gap during his pinch-hitting appearance in the seventh inning and broke out what appears to be the club's new big hit celebration. If you didn't catch it, it appears to be inspired by the "Hingle McCringleberry Excessive Celebration" sketch from Key and Peele.

Mayer's version can be found below:

Who? What? Why?

I don't know if we'll ever find the answer to those questions, or any offshoots of those questions, but prospect Braiden Ward did spill the beans and share that players were working on the celebration during spring training during his appearance on WEEI's Jones & Keefe on Friday.

The Red Sox have been known to switch things up throughout the season, with their base hit and home run celebrations undergoing midseason changes over the last couple of seasons. If they intend on keeping the current one, they will need to make sure no one gets hit with excessive celebration -- two pumps is fine, three is too much.
