Man United could sign an Everton midfielder in the January transfer window according to reports.
Man United’s biggest priority in the summer transfer window is to strengthen Michael Carrick’s midfield, as the United boss lacks depth and quality in the middle of the park.
With Casemiro’s contract due to expire at the end of the season, Carrick will be keen to add a holding midfielder to become the long-term replacement for the Brazil international, and their shortlist is growing.
It is understood that United are going to make a marquee midfield signing in the summer, and that could involve a player with proven Premier League experience, such as Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali. But in recent days, a new name has emerged.
Man United could sign Everton’s Garner
Everton’s James Garner could potentially be a new target for the Red Devils as the mifielder has impressed this season for the Toffees, and has even earned himself his first call up to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.
According to TeamTalk, Man United view Garner as a player who ‘ticks the boxes in price and quality’ and also knows the club, as he came through the United academy.
The 24-year-old has become a reliable midfield option for David Moyes, making 31 Premier League appearances this season. He’s scored two goals and provided five assists from the holding midfield role that Moyes trusts him with.
In terms of cost, there has been no reported figure for Garner, but he has an estimated market value of around £30m, so he could be less than £50m, which would make Garner a much cheaper option compared to the likes of Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, who United have also been linked with.
Man United set to invest heavily in midfield in the summer
This most recent update has confirmed what has been said for several months, that United are likely to spend big on a new midfielder in the summer transfer window. It narrows down the list of potential signings at the end of the season to three major Premier League stars.
As mentioned, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton have both been linked, and it is believed that Anderson would command a fee of £100m plus, and Wharton would cost at least £70m.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is the third name on the list, as United enquired about signing him in the summer, and could go back in for the Cameroon international. He is also expected to cost at least £100m, as Brighton want to sell him for a similar fee to Moises Caicedo, who left for a total of £115m in 2023.
