Derrick White is one of the best two-way players in the NBA today.

The Boston Celtics received a boost both on the injury front and in the standings ahead of Friday’s matchup against the Atlanta Hawks.

Guard Derrick White has been cleared to play after previously being listed as questionable with a right knee contusion, while the New York Knicks’ loss to the Charlotte Hornets provided additional breathing room in the race for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

The combination gives Boston added momentum entering a key late-season matchup against one of the league’s hottest teams.

Atlanta enters the contest having won 14 of its last 15 games, climbing to 41-32 and the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference after spending much of the season near the play-in line.

White Cleared After Recent Shooting Dip

White is coming off a 12-point outing in Boston’s 119-109 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, finishing 3-of-11 from the field and 2-of-7 from three-point range while adding six assists in 33 minutes.

While the Celtics secured the win behind Jaylen Brown’s 31-point performance, White has experienced a recent dip in scoring efficiency.

Over his last four games, White has not surpassed the 15-point mark, averaging 13.0 points while shooting 38.8% from the field and 22.2% from beyond the arc during that stretch.

The shift coincides with the return of Jayson Tatum, who has resumed his primary role in the offense after missing time earlier this season. With Tatum and Brown leading the scoring load, White has settled back into a complementary role.

Still a Key Piece in Celtics’ Success

Despite the recent shooting struggles, White remains one of Boston’s most impactful two-way players.

Through 68 games this season, he is averaging 17.2 points, 5.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals while leading the team with a cumulative +517 plus/minus.

His impact has drawn praise from opposing coaches around the league.

“There are certain guys that get labeled as role players, but they execute the role so well that they ascend out of that category,” Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault said. “He’s one of them… He’s been a connective tissue for them in terms of the success they’ve had.”

Cleveland Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson offered similar praise earlier this month, going as far as calling White a “top-five player” analytically — a statement that underscored his value beyond traditional box score numbers.

Celtics Building Momentum as Race Tightens

Boston enters Friday’s matchup coming off a statement win over Oklahoma City, snapping the Thunder’s 12-game winning streak.

Brown led the way with 14 of his 31 points in a pivotal third quarter, while Tatum added 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists as the Celtics pulled away late.

The Celtics also dominated second-chance opportunities, outscoring Oklahoma City 19-2 in that category while holding them to 12-of-37 shooting from beyond the arc.

The win pushed Boston to 48-34 on the season and recent results elsewhere in the conference have helped its position. The Knicks’ loss to the Charlotte Hornets created additional breathing room, giving the Celtics a full one-game lead for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

However, that margin remains fragile. A loss to Atlanta would cut Boston’s advantage back down to just a half-game, underscoring the importance of Friday’s matchup.

Matchup Carries Playoff Implications

Friday’s game presents a meeting of two teams trending upward.

Boston continues to position itself among the top contenders in the East, while Atlanta’s late-season surge has strengthened its playoff standing and made it a potential threat in the postseason.

With White now cleared to play, the Celtics will have their full rotation available as they look to maintain momentum and solidify their standing.

With the postseason approaching and the standings tightening, each result carries added importance — especially for a Celtics team still fighting to secure one of the top seeds in the conference.
