Keane was scheduled to be on punditry duty for England's match against Uruguay, but was absent as a result. Ian Wright and USA women's manager Emme Hayes were in attendance as pundits, as Thomas Tuchel's side continued their World Cup preparations.

Marg Pougatch took a moment to send his best wishes to Keane. He said: "Everyone here and all of us at ITV sends our condolences to Roy and his family on the sad passing of his mother Marie.

"All of our thoughts are with the Keane family this evening."

A notice on RIP.ie confirmed the news earlier on Friday and noted that Marie would be "sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, her great neighbours and friends."

Rockmount AFC, Keane's schoolboy club in Cork, were among the first to offer their condolences. They said: "Sincere condolences extended to Keane and Lynch family on the passing of Marie."

During an episode of Stick to Football released last year, Keane became emotional after coming across a photograph of his parents while looking through his career memorabilia. The Manchester United legend was comforted by fellow hosts Ian Wright, Jill Scott, and Gary Neville.

Keane lost his father in 2019 when Maurice 'Mossie' Keane died aged 79. He had suffered a stroke the year before.

Marie was not afraid to stick up her outspoken son, when he was criticised in Sir Alex Ferguson's autobiography. The former United boss wrote in that Keane had a "savage tongue" and had to be moved on for the greater good of the club after "overstepping his mark".

Marie said in 2013: "God almighty, I can’t believe Sir Alex would say such things about Roy. I just can’t believe it.

"I would have never thought he would do something like this. He's our son and he has a wife and children, and it's not nice for any of us to hear someone run a loved one down like that.

"It’s all very nasty what he said," she added. "It’s nasty, really. It’s terrible and I’m very upset."
