Anthony Edwards cleared for on-court practice, out for Saturday’s game

Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards remains out for Minnesota’s nationally-televised game Saturday against East-leading Detroit, but his return appears to be nearing.

Edwards, who’s missed the last five Wolves’ games with right knee patellofermoral pain syndrom, was cleared to return to on-court practice activities, the team announced Friday.

Edwards has been present on the practice floor this week, though on an individual return to play plan separate from the team’s practices, per coach Chris Finch.

His next possible return date is Tuesday, when the Wolves play in Dallas.

Edwards would have to return against Dallas and play in each of Minnesota’s last eight games to reach the 65-game minimum required to be eligible for postseason honors, including All-NBA. But the priority of both Edwards and the Wolves is to make sure the guard is as close to 100% as he can be when the playoffs begin in a few weeks.

Minnesota is 4-1 in the five games its star player has missed, so there’s no reason to rush his return.

Jaden McDaniels is also listed as out for Saturday’s tilt with right knee soreness after he left the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s win over Houston and did not return. McDaniels originally described the injury as “cramping.”

Ayo Dosunmu, who missed Wednesday’s contest with tightness in his right calf, is questionable for the Detroit game.

Finch said both McDaniels and Dosunmu participated in Minnesota’s walk through on Friday.
