Tottenham have been linked with a shock move for emerging Chelsea talent.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham Hotspur will stick with interim head coach Igor Tudor after their disappointing 3-0 loss to relegation rivals Nottingham Forest last weekend. The result meant Tudor has lost four of his five Premier League matches as the Lilywhites’ gaffer.
The club’s current objective is to somehow preserve its top-flight status. Tudor has proven that he’s not the man for the job and another change in the dugout is very much required before Tottenham take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in their next fixture. Simultaneously, it looks like the N17 chiefs have started planning behind the scenes to reinforce the squad.
Spurs are expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer as they need a strong squad to bounce back from a forgettable campaign. They are expected to target upgrades in various areas of the pitch and will strengthen in defensive positions amid the uncertain futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
Reliable German journalist reveals Tottenham’s interest in Chelsea youngster
Injuries to Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall left Tottenham short in midfield, leading to them raiding Atletico Madrid for former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. Now, it appears the North Londoners are directly showing interest in their rivals’ talented academy prospect.
According to reliable German journalist Christian Falk, Tottenham are one of three Premier League sides considering a move for Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong. West Ham and Newcastle United are also understood to be keeping tabs on the youngster’s situation, while German giants Bayern Munich are also credited with an interest.
“Yes, we still have three rumours that we haven’t been able to fully verify yet, so it’s neither clearly true nor clearly not true, but we still want to talk about them. One of them is Josh Acheampong from Chelsea’s youth setup. He keeps being linked to Bayern, and you could say he’s an interesting player,” Christian Falk said on his YouTube channel Bayern Insider.
“Clubs like Newcastle, Tottenham, and West Ham are all said to have interest. He’s not entirely satisfied at Chelsea, isn’t getting much playing time, and could be an option for Bayern. And they are indeed looking at that position.”
Josh Acheampong is going nowhere
One of the highly-rated prospects to emerge from the Chelsea academy in recent years, Acheampong has fallen down the pecking order since Mamadou Sarr’s return from a loan spell at Strasbourg in February. This has ignited interest from the aforementioned clubs, who are understood to be monitoring his progress closely, impressed by his ability to operate effectively in multiple defensive roles. He is equally comfortable operating at right-back and centre-back, whilst possessing the technical security and turn of pace to defend large spaces.
The 19-year-old has made only 12 Premier League appearances for the Pensioners this season, but it’s been enough to put several clubs on red alert. However, contrary to Falk’s claims, Chelsea have reportedly no interest in selling Acheampong this summer. Instead, they intend to groom him and hand him a more prominent role in the first-team squad next season.
This should be enough to extinguish any hopes of the suitors keen on signing the versatile defender, including Tottenham. Spurs may hold an interest in the youngster, but luring him away from bitter London rivals Chelsea is unrealistic. As things stand, the Blues are unlikely to entertain any offers for their highly-rated academy talent.
