How the national media reacted to Chelsea star Cole Palmer's England display against Uruguay

Having made his first international appearance under Thomas Tuchel as a second-half substitute, Cole Palmer’s England cameo against Uruguay got a positive response from the national media.

Cole Palmer came on as a second-half substitute against Uruguay for Manchester City’s Phil Foden with just over 30 minutes to play at Wembley.

He operated in a bit of a free-roam role centrally, which is a position that Thomas Tuchel stated was Cole Palmer’s best in the lead-up to the friendly.

It was his corner that led to the first goal, as Harvey Barnes knocked it goalwards before Ben White got the finishing touch. He had a couple of promising moments, creating an opportunity for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and causing havoc from another corner.

And the national media agreed with that assessment of the Chelsea midfielder.

Quarter-final 2! Xabi Alonso or Cesc Fabregas?

The national media were extremely impressed with Cole Palmer’s cameo, he was one of the only players to actually take the ball and drive forward.

And perhaps should have had an assist, as previously mentioned, had Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his header.

BBC – The start of the battle for the number 10 position for Palmer. Brought on in place of Foden and the Chelsea playmaker looked to make things happen and should have had an assist when his free-kick was headed wide from close range by Calvert-Lewin. 6

iPaper – On in the 56th minute for Foden and delivered a terrific ball for the striker below with 20 minutes to go. Wanted the ball often and impressed more than the Manchester City man he replaced, and it was from his corner where England scored. If you think this score is too generous, it’s warranted for the impact he made. 8/10

Evening Standard – Superb cross to create big chance for Calvert-Lewin. Committed defenders as he picked the ball up deep and ran with it. Corner created the chaos for goal. 7
