Tuchel's advice to ex-Albion defender as he scores for England and is booed

Tuchel was disappointed but says White must “take it on the chin” and write some new chapters after his eventful international return.

The 28-year-old was the eighth and final substitute against Uruguay on Friday evening, when being jeered onto the field for his first cap in four years proved just the start of things.

White had made himself unavailable under Sir Gareth Southgate having left the 2022 World Cup for what the Football Association called “personal reasons” and some England fans even booed the confirmation that he had poked Tuchel’s side ahead.

The drama continued as the Arsenal defender followed his first international goal by giving away a stoppage-time penalty that was converted by Federico Valverde as an otherwise flat friendly ended in a frantic 1-1 draw.

“I heard that he was booed,” Tuchel said. “I didn’t hear it actually on the field because I was involved in the changes and instructions, so I didn’t hear it so I think then it cannot be the majority.

“There were some boos and some mixed reception for him, which I am disappointed about because of course we protect our players and he was excellent in camp and he deserved to come on.

“He deserved also to start and got us almost the winner, but I also understood that it happened to other players before here (at Wembley).

“He needs to take it on the chin. We will always protect him and hopefully we can put it behind (us) because he is ready to write some new chapters and we are ready to give him the chance, so hopefully everyone can move on and accept it.”

Whether White remains with the squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Japan remains to be seen as Tuchel needs to check fitness and availability before 11 established players link up with the group.

He played in the centre-back role with which he first made his name with the Seagulls.

Arsenal tend to employ him at right-back, which could entail him marking Kaoru Mitoma in the Japan game.
