The San Francisco 49ers are being encouraged to address a key weakness on their offensive line ahead of the 2026 season. One proposed solution involves acquiring Houston Texans guard Jarrett Patterson.
San Francisco’s interior line has faced questions following inconsistent play, particularly at the right guard position previously held by Spencer Burford. Strengthening that spot has become a priority as the team looks to maintain offensive efficiency.

Patterson has emerged as a potential trade target due to his reliability and versatility along the line. Known for his technique and awareness, he has shown the ability to handle multiple roles while maintaining steady performance.
For the 49ers, adding a player like Patterson could provide immediate stability in pass protection and the run game. His presence would support an offense built on timing and balance, which relies heavily on cohesive line play.

San Francisco is urged to trade for Patterson as a viable replacement for Burford. This is detailed more in an analysis by Moe Moton for Bleacher Report.
However, general manager John Lynch should make a move for Jarrett Patterson to replace Spencer Burford, who signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, as an upgrade over Connor Colby and Robert Jones. The latter signed with San Francisco on Monday, but he missed the entire 2025 season because of a neck injury.
San Francisco should reach out to the Houston Texans, who signed three-time Pro Bowl guard Wyatt Teller. The 49ers may be able to acquire Jarrett Patterson for a 2027 pick if they don’t want to give up one of their four fourth-rounders this year.
In 2025, Patterson transitioned from center to left guard, starting in five out of 17 outings. He allowed zero sacks while on the field for 206 pass-blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus.
The 26-year-old only has a small sample size of snaps at left guard in the pros, but he also played the position in his final collegiate term at Notre Dame. He has enough experience to carve out a starting role with a change of scenery.
The Texans, meanwhile, would need to weigh the value of moving a dependable contributor against their own roster needs. Any potential deal would likely depend on compensation and long-term planning for both teams.
As the offseason unfolds, the 49ers remain focused on refining their roster for another competitive push. Addressing the offensive line could prove critical in sustaining their success and protecting the foundation of their offense.
