Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes delivers incredible news at his alma mater.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is doing everything he can to be ready to play when the 2026 NFL season kicks off.
After suffering an ACL tear in December, the usual timeline puts his earliest return at mid-September. However, the 30-year-old doesn’t want to miss even one start. Earlier this week, Mahomes returned to his alma mater, Texas Tech, to participate in the program’s Pro Day.
During his visit to Lubbock, Mahomes was on the field with several Red Raiders players and even made a few throws. “Day by Day! Felt Great being able to throw the ball around today,” the two-time league MVP wrote on his Instagram Stories.
“I want to be ready for Week 1,” Mahomes told reporters in January. “The doctors said I could, but I can’t predict what happens throughout the process. That’s the goal, to play Week 1 and have no restrictions.” Based on his movement while throwing this week, the three-time Super Bowl MVP’s rehab appears to be going incredibly well.
Mahomes, however, had even more business to attend to while in Texas, and it had to do with one of the school’s biggest stars.
Patrick Mahomes Surprised NiJaree Canady With the AUSL’s ‘Golden Ticket’
Red Raiders softball pitcher NiJaree Canady learned she was the AUSL’s first “golden ticket” winner of 2026 on March 27. With a “golden ticket,” Canady is guaranteed to be drafted by one of the six AUSL teams.
AUSL commissioner Kim Ng presented the ticket to the 2025 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year with a surprise appearance by Mahomes. “This is my first time in Lubbock on a really, really special day,” Ng started. So I asked for a little help from a person I think Red Raider fans are a little familiar with…”
When Ng mentioned Mahomes’ name, the entire team screamed with excitement.
After Mahomes shared the big news, Canady was swarmed with hugs by her teammates.
Mahomes, of course, is no stranger to Canady. In August 2024, the superstar pitcher signed an endorsement deal with Adidas and Team Patrick Mahomes.

Canady, who received a historic $1.2 million deal to transfer from Stanford to Texas Tech, led the Red Raiders to their first Women’s College World Series appearance in franchise history last season. Before the Red Raiders kicked off their WCWS run, Mahomes sent the entire team an epic present.
Every member of the Red Raiders squad received personalized red and black letterman jackets with their number on the front and a pair of Adidas sneakers.
Mahomes promised he’d try to make it a WCWS game in person. He proved to be good luck as the Red Raiders got a 4-3 victory in a must-win Game 2. However, the Red Raiders unfortunately lost the winner-take-all Game 3. Canady, named first-team All-American for a third consecutive year signed another seven-figure deal to remain at Texas Tech this season.
