Harry Maguire lambasts'ridiculous'penalty incident after England draw

Harry Maguire was left frustrated at a VAR intervention that led to the referee awarding Uruguay a penalty in stoppage time that cost England a win at Wembley.

Three Manchester United players played for England on Friday night when Thomas Tuchel’s side drew 1-1 against Uruguay at Wembley.

The United trio included starters Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford, while Kobbie Mainoo had to wait until the second half to come off the bench.

England were unable to record a win on the night, but that was because Uruguay scored a penalty kick deep in stoppage time.

Harry Maguire reflects on England draw at Wembley

Maguire was making his first appearance for England under Tuchel tonight.

It was a chance for the 33-year-old to prove himself again for the Three Lions ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The experienced centre back played the full 90 minutes of Friday’s friendly, in a game that saw England look disjointed at times against the South Americans.

“I thought that we controlled the whole game really , they didn’t create a chance,” Maguire told ITV at full-time.

“We could have been better, we know that.

“When we made changes, we lost a bit of the rhythm with the game plan, but that is what happens in these games when you make changes on 60-70 minutes. But we had control of the game, they didn’t really get in our box, and then it’s a ridiculous penalty.”

Arsenal defender Ben White, who scored the opening goal, was judged to have made a foul inside the England penalty area moments before the final whistle.

When asked about the incident, Maguire stressed that White was simply trying to win the ball and there was nothing ‘malicious’ about it.

“He’s kicked the ball over the bar,” he added.

“Ben’s just goes to try to block the shot. It’s not a bad tackle, it’s not malicious.

“It’s part and parcel of defending in the box, there is going to be contact.”

When are England in action next?

England host Japan at Wembley on Tuesday night.

It will be another opportunity for Maguire, Mainoo and Rashford to make a claim for the World Cup squad.

Tuchel is expected to reshuffle his squad and there will likely be starts for some of those who missed out on the line-up against Uruguay.

The match on Tuesday night kicks off at 7:45pm.
