Manchester United are ‘working hard’ on a summer deal for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed.
The Old Trafford side are targeting the Italy international as part of their midfield overhaul after the season, as they look to potentially replace both Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte.
Romano predicts an ‘intense summer’ for Newcastle, who may struggle to keep hold of their star players amid significant interest from Premier League clubs.
The Magpies captain Bruno Guimaraes is also believed to be of interest to United, while Tonali is on the radar of league leaders Arsenal.

Romano, speaking on his Italian YouTube channel, revealed that both Manchester United and Manchester City are expected to sign midfielders this summer, and Tonali is on the shortlist for both clubs:
“It will be an intense summer for Newcastle, as there has already been interest [in Tonali] from Arsenal since January.
“But Arsenal at this moment, are a separate topic, because both Manchester United and City will both target important midfielders. United could even sign two.
“Sandro Tonali is a player really appreciated internally, especially by United. The number one target for Man City at this moment is Elliot Anderson. Manchester United are working hard on Tonali.”
Newcastle are in a strong negotiating position for Tonali, who is under contract until the summer of 2029, with reports claiming the Magpies value the 'superstar' Italian at around £100million.
However, the Magpies’ bargaining position could be weakened if they fail to qualify for continental competition this season, as they sit just 12th in the table at the moment.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 and has since made 104 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists.

Manchester United appear to be heading for another busy summer transfer window after spending over £200 million on new signings before the season.
The Red Devils will prioritise a replacement for Casemiro, who is set to leave at the end of his contract, and could also look to offload Manuel Ugarte.
The Uruguayan midfielder has struggled for regular minutes at Old Trafford under both Ruben Amorim and interim boss Michael Carrick, managing just seven Premier League starts this season.
According to Romano, Italian clubs are closely monitoring Ugarte ahead of the summer, while Galatasaray showed brief interest in January.
