Michael Carrick doesn't yet know whether he will be in charge of Manchester United beyond the end of this season

Manchester United supporters have a long wait for club football even after the international break but the work doesn't stop at Carrington.

Numerous first-team players are on national team duty, with interim manager Michael Carrick diligently training the non-internationals. Club skipper Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot are off with Portugal, while Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo have linked up in the England squad. Other international stars include Senne Lammens, Casemiro, Matheus Cunha and Manuel Ugarte - the latter who had a very eventful evening in Uruguay's 1-1 draw with the Three Lions.

Carrick will carry on with crucial work as United prepare for Leeds United's visit on Monday, April 13. With the Premier League's comeback still some time away for the Red Devils, preparations for the summer transfer window will also be in full swing. Here's all the latest news from Old Trafford.

Club gets new manager update

United have suffered a significant setback in their hunt for a new manager as Luis Enrique appears set to pen a new contract at Paris Saint-Germain, reports the Mirror.

The Spaniard is on the club's shortlist as they consider options for a new head coach but information has surfaced about the Champions League winner's immediate future.

The i paper reveals club president Nasser Al‐Khelaifi is eager to retain Enrique for the foreseeable future. The 55-year-old currently has a contract that lasts until 2027, but this seems set to be extended shortly.

It's believed the acquisition of Dro Fernandez in January was seen as a 'sweetener' to retain Enrique for the future. This development has reportedly left Carrick 'closing in' on the permanent role as he was expected to keep the position warm for a newcomer.

The interim manager has been impressive since succeeding Ruben Amorim in January, with supporters calling for his tenure to be made permanent.

Bruno Fernandes gives move green light

Club captain Fernandes has reportedly endorsed the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle as United close in on midfield reinforcements.

The Red Devils are eager to bolster their midfield and the Italian, 25, has been linked with an exit from the north east - with Arsenal also reportedly interested.

Sandro Tonali of Italy celebrates scoring his team's first goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 European Qualifiers KO play-offs match between Italy and Northern Ireland at Stadio di Bergamo on March 26, 2026 in Bergamo, Italy.

With Newcastle almost certain to miss out on Champions League next season - and United maintaining a European spot in the table - star players like Tonali could be looking for new opportunities.

The Daily Mail reports United are anticipated to submit a formal offer for the former AC Milan star. Fernandes is said to back the chase as Tonali is expected to be favoured over other options like Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton.

talkSPORT reports a fee of between £80million and £100m could be sufficient to convince the Magpies to part with a key member of their midfield. Newcastle paid £52m for Tonali three years ago and aim to make a profit if they are to lose his services.

The midfielder remains under contract at Newcastle until 2028 with the option of a further year and Tonali has no release clauses or special arrangements within his current agreement with the club.

According to The Chronicle, any suggestion of a 'gentleman's agreement' to leave at the end of the season, should Newcastle fail to secure European football, is 'totally untrue'.
