Payton Pritchard Reveals Truth About Joe Mazzulla’s Coaching Style

Joe Mazzulla is rapidly proving himself to be one of the best coaches in the NBA. In a season where the Boston Celtics were expected to struggle, Mazzulla has guided the team to second in the Eastern Conference, and, along with his coaching staff, has overseen developmental growth from numerous players within the rotation.

The fourth-year head coach is also known for coaching his players hard, while putting a premium on building relationships with every individual on the roster and using out-of-the-box thinking to give his team an edge. Earlier this season, when the Celtics were struggling on the defensive glass, Mazzulla would pull guys off the bench “if he felt they weren't bringing the necessary energy to rebounding. The result of that approach has seen the Celtics become a top-five rebounding team in the NBA.

When speaking with the media following the Celtics’ 109-102 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, March 27, Payton Pritchard was asked whether Mazzulla gets on the team during difficult stretches of games, such as when shots aren’t falling, or the opposing team is on a scoring run.

“I think he definitely has a great feel for it (when to coach hard, and when to give some grace), but I also think he has trust in us that, for most nights, we bring it and we bring it at a high level,” Pritchard said. “Sometimes the ball doesn't bounce our way, and we're missing shots. So he'll give us grace, but hopefully, it never affects our effort. As long as we're playing hard defensively, trying to rebound, all those things, then he doesn't really jump us.”

Against the Hawks, the Celtics fought back from a 16-point deficit, securing an important win in the battle for the second seed in the East. Pritchard was a catalyst for Boston in that game, ending the night with 36 points on 13-of-23 shooting, including 6-of-11 from deep.

Mazzulla has found a solid balance with his coaching. He knows when to hold his players accountable and when to be a supportive, reassuring voice. The results speak for themselves. After all, Mazzulla has amassed a 231-88 record since taking over as Boston’s head coach, including a championship in 2024.

Celtics fans will now be hoping that his unique style of coaching, along with his talented staff, can help guide the Celtics on another deep postseason run this season.
