West Ham United are assessing potential transfer targets ahead of the summer window
West Ham United are continuing to work on potential summer transfer deals behind the scenes as the Hammers’ quest to remain in the Premier League for next term goes on.
With the squad enjoying an international break at present and the likes of England’s Jarrod Bowen away on duty, an important two months lie ahead as the Hammers aim to remain in the top flight. Currently sat in the relegation zone ahead of Tottenham Hotspur by a single point, it looks set to go right down to the wire.
West Ham might be faced with losing key players if they do drop down to the Championship and will also see their own summer transfer business impacted. At present, it only makes sense that the club are preparing themselves for both eventualities while trusting in their ability to get the job done on the pitch.
West Ham ‘serious interest’ in Aleix Garcia emerges
According to reports by Fussballdaten in Germany, West Ham are ‘seriously interested’ in Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Aleix Garcia as the former Manchester City man considers his future ahead of the summer.
The 28-year-old spent five years at City as a young player before departing permanently in 2020 and finding his feet in La Liga and then the Bundesliga. His five goals and nine assists in 40 starts in all competitions this term have shown a player capable of impacting games on a consistent basis, including in the Champions League.
Atletico Madrid from Garcia’s native Spain made an attempt to sign him in January and are thought still to be interested, with a bid of €25million (£21.6m) reportedly being prepared. But Leverkusen are said to be demanding no less than €30m (£26m) for the eight-cap Spanish international.
West Ham are said to be closely watching Garcia’s development and adaptation to the pace of the Bundesliga as they consider bringing him back to the Premier League this summer. The German side’s ‘rejuvenation’ in midfield might help out the Hammers in negotiations, and the asking price will prove no issue for the east London outfit if they remain in the Premier League.
The Hammers have been missing a sprinkling of stardust in midfield since Lucas Paqueta departed for boyhood club Flamengo in January, and midfield ‘maestro’ Garcia could be the remedy for this. Leverkusen may seriously consider offers for a player they signed for around £15m from Girona ahead of the Hammers in 2024, with a return to either of La Liga or the Premier League both emerging as possibilities.
