Ian Wright drops his verdict on Chelsea's Cole Palmer after England's 1-1 draw

Highlighting the stark contrast in attacking intent during England’s clash with Uruguay, Ian Wright has praised Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer’s cameo.

The national media were left raving about Cole Palmer’s display against Uruguay, with several outlets naming him as England’s only bright spark.

It was his corner that brought about England’s only goal, but it was more of a positive for Chelsea fans to see Palmer getting back to his near best in the number 10 role.

Liam Rosenior hasn’t seen it the same way at Chelsea, opting to use Palmer out wide on either the left or right flank, which takes away his freedom and creativity at times.

Ian Wright got an in-person view of Palmer’s display in the number 10 role, and he was very impressed.

Ian Wright impressed with Cole Palmer’s directness for England

Speaking on the ITV live coverage after the 1-1 draw, Ian Wright was full of praise for the way that Palmer created things after being brought on.

“He’d be devastated looking at that, especially with the opportunity he found himself in. But you know, you look at Cole Palmer. Look, he’s just taking people on and this is all we wanted to see all day.

“Someone just going positively at people, taking people on, making things happen. And that’s what he’s done. You know, another great ball in and obviously we get the goal from it.

“Um, I think Dominic Calvert-Lewin does well here to dive in there, which does kind of deflect it, causes problems, and then to tap in at the back.”

Liam Rosenior faces a dilemma at Chelsea

It would be as simple as inserting Cole Palmer into the number 10 role after witnessing his performance for England.

However, Enzo Fernandez operated in an advanced role for Argentina and even played in the number nine position, scoring in their 2-1 win over Mauritius.

Fernandez has shared just how happy he is to be in a free-roam, more advanced role at Chelsea, but you can’t have him and Palmer operating that way, especially with two wingers and a striker.

It’s a difficult one, as you want the creativity of both players in central areas, but you also don’t want to leave Moises Caicedo and the defence exposed.
