Luka Dončić scored 41 points before his suspension takes effect

Luka Dončić delivered a dominant 41-point performance Friday night as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Brooklyn Nets 116-99.

Dončić added 8 rebounds and recorded his 15th 40-point game of the season. He was efficient throughout and controlled the tempo offensively as Los Angeles secured its 14th win in the last 16 games.

The Lakers built separation in the second half and maintained control down the stretch. The win continued a surge that has moved them firmly into the top tier of the Western Conference playoff picture.

Dončić has been the driving force behind that stretch. His scoring volume, shot creation, and ability to dictate pace have transformed the Lakers’ offense into one of the more difficult units to defend in recent weeks.

The Friday night performance was another example of that control. He created space, got to his spots, and consistently broke down Brooklyn’s defense in both half-court sets and transition.

But the night also carried immediate consequences.

Suspension Confirmed After 16th Technical Foul

Dončić was assessed his 16th technical foul of the season in the third quarter, triggering an automatic one-game suspension under NBA rules.

The sequence began after an offensive foul in the backcourt. Ziaire Williams approached Dončić following the whistle, and Dončić made contact with him. After a review for a hostile act, both players were issued technical fouls.

“I didn’t even talk. I just wanted to get out of there,” Dončić said. “They said I pushed, my push was exaggerated, which it obviously was not. And I don’t know what else to say.”

The suspension will be served Monday against the Washington Wizards unless the technical foul is rescinded.

Lakers coach JJ Redick said the team expects to appeal the call.

This is not the first time Dončić has been close to the threshold. A recent technical foul was rescinded earlier this month, briefly keeping him below the suspension line before Friday’s incident pushed him to 16.

Strong Run Faces Brief Interruption

The timing comes as Los Angeles is playing its best basketball of the season.

The Lakers have relied heavily on Dončić’s production during this stretch, particularly in closing quarters and high-leverage possessions. His ability to generate offense consistently has been a major factor in the team’s recent success.

Even a one-game absence matters in the current standings race. With positioning in the Western Conference tightening, each game carries added weight as teams look to secure playoff seeding and avoid the Play-In Tournament.

NBA rules require a one-game suspension after a player reaches 16 technical fouls. Additional suspensions are issued for every two technical fouls beyond that total. The count resets once the playoffs begin.

For now, the Lakers will move forward without him in their next game.

Friday’s result still reinforced the larger picture. Dončić is performing at an elite level, and Los Angeles continues to build momentum as the regular season enters its final stretch with playoffs just a few weeks away.
