REPORT: Liverpool Are‘Ready’To Pay£69M To Sign Van Dijk’s Successor

Liverpool are lining up a summer approach for Nottingham Forest defender Murillo, according to reports.

TEAMtalk claim that the Reds are “ready to launch” a bid in the region of €80m (£69m) for the 23-year-old.

Murillo is seen as a potential long-term replacement for captain Virgil van Dijk, whose contract at Anfield expires at the end of next season.

Scouts have been keeping a close eye on the Brazilian, with observers having watched him on several occasions as the Merseysiders weigh up a move for the centre-back.

Several Premier League clubs are tracking Murillo

The player’s performances for Nottingham Forest have unsurprisingly attracted the attention of Liverpool’s rivals as well.

Like the Reds, Chelsea have been monitoring Murillo in recent months, while the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham all have varying levels of interest.

The Gunners have considered making a bid in past transfer windows, but they are well-catered for in the middle of the defence currently.

United, meanwhile, are prioritising other positions (including central midfield, the left wing and left-back), and Spurs’s pursuit would undoubtedly depend on them retaining their top-flight status. Chelsea are probably the likeliest of the four to rival Liverpool for Murillo.

Liverpool need to be mindful of their transfer budget

Splashing out close to £70m on Murillo would be a big decision for Arne Slot’s side. They have already spent €60m (£52m) on another centre-back, Jeremy Jacquet, while finding a replacement for club icon Mo Salah is an absolute necessity too.

Sporting director Richard Hughes has some massive decisions to make over the coming weeks, and the make-up of the first-team squad could be drastically altered by the start of next season. It is set to be another summer of change at Anfield.
