The Minnesota Timberwolves are set to play the Detroit Pistons on Saturday in a game that features a heavy injury report for both sides.

In the lead-up to the cross-conference matchup, both teams announced their injury reports. However, while the Pistons have yet to determine the final status of some of their key players, the Timberwolves, on the other hand, have already ruled out three of their major contributors for the game.

Anthony Edwards highlights that list, as while he is reportedly ramping up for a return from a knee injury, he will not play against Detroit on Saturday.

Edwards was sidelined more than ten days ago with right knee inflammation, a decision and injury that, while not super serious, was a precautionary measure to make sure the franchise star would be healthy for another deep playoff run.

Based on the latest update, Edwards is still doing individual workouts, and while Shams Charania of ESPN and Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic had previously tabbed the game against the Pistons as a potential return date, that is no longer the case.

Chris Finch says Anthony Edwards still just doing individual stuff right now. Will get an official injury report later but that would seem to make tomorrow unlikely

“Edwards, who has missed the last five games with right knee patellofemoral pain syndrome, has been cleared for on-court basketball practice activities and further updates of his progress will be provided when available,” the Timberwolves wrote in an official announcement on Friday.

Since that update, Edwards has been ruled out for Saturday’s game. Minnesota’s next contest against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday could be when he makes his return, but for now, that is still undecided.

The original timeline on Edward’s injury was one to two weeks.

In 58 games this season, the star shooting guard is averaging a career-high and third in the NBA 29.5 points, along with 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists on 49.2% shooting from the field.

He is at risk of missing out on the league’s end of season awards due to his current injury status and the NBA’s ’65-game rule.’

Besides just Edwards, the Timberwolves have two other key players they recently ruled out for the Saturday afternoon game against the top seed in the East.

Trade deadline acquisition Ayo Dosunmu missed Minnesota’s overtime thriller against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday with a calf injury, and while he was briefly upgraded to questionable against the Pistons, he’s since been ruled out.

Krawczynski first described the calf injury for Dosunmu as ‘concerning‘ and while he did report the point guard was practicing with the team on Friday, that didn’t result in his status being fully upgraded for the weekend contest.

Additionally, the Timberwolves will also be without Jaden McDaniels. He left the team’s win over Houston with cramps, and while he did say he would play against Detroit, that is no longer the case. The 25-year-old is officially out with a knee injury.

Edwards, Dosunmu, and McDaniels, along with a few two-way players, make up the Timberwolves’ injury report for Saturday.

Oppositely, the Pistons have ruled out franchise star and previously MVP candidate Cade Cunningham as he continues to recover from a collapsed lung. The team is hopeful the point guard will return for postseason action.

Detroit also has Jalen Duren (knee) and Tobias Harris (hip) listed as probable against Minnesota.

The Timberwolves are 45-28, currently fifth in the West but attempting to win as many of their last nine regular season games as possible to jump the Denver Nuggets and secure home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

However, without Edwards, and potentially Dosunmu and McDaniels for the time being, that could be a tall task.
