Manchester United’s planned summer midfield overhaul could end up being scuppered by Manchester City, as they plan their own rebuild in the same position.
This summer will see the central-midfield position dominate the transfer window, as both Manchester United and City are expected to be active in the market.
Elliot Anderson was United’s top priority for a long period this season. However, with City likely in pole position for Anderson, United have been forced to look elsewhere.
United’s midfield search is narrowed to three options, with Manchester City sharing a similar list.

Manchester City looking at Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali double move
In the past week, Sandro Tonali has emerged as United’s top target in midfield. But his clear quality means that Ineos won’t be the only suitor.
According to TeamTalk, United are set to be rivalled by Man City not only for Anderson but also for Tonali.
The Etihad-based side are positioning themselves to try and bring in both midfielders, with the two Premier League stars considered capable of overhauling their midfield this summer.

If reports are to be believed, United are planning a move for Tonali once this season concludes.
Missing both could be detrimental to United’s plans in midfield, leaving Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton as the two first-choice names on the shortlist to sign.

Manchester United’s perfect midfield signings must be complementary
When overhauling a position like United will do this summer in midfield, it is important not to just sign the biggest names or most expensive names.
If United do this, it would potentially leave the Red Devils unbalanced in midfield.
Tonali would be a brilliant addition, but only if United put the right players around him. With the Italian being more of a combative midfielder who shines in chaos, he should be partnered more with a progressive passer.
Anderson and Tonali is also a brilliant pairing, alongside Kobbie Mainoo, which is three starters for two positions, the type of quality needed to compete on multiple fronts.
