Marcelo Bielsa reveals wholesome Leeds United reunion moment with £50m England star

Leeds United legend Marcelo Bielsa reunited with former loan star Ben White as England drew 1-1 with Uruguay on Friday night.

United fans were all glued to TVs, or willing to make the pilgrimage down to London in order to get a glimpse of Marcelo Bielsa once again.

The Uruguay boss was in the Wembley dugout against England on Friday night. It was a largely uneventful affair that was sparked into life late on by a former Leeds favourite.

Ben White scores and gives away penalty as former Leeds United star has big say in England 1-1 Uruguay

With the game scoreless for the first 80 minutes, substitute Ben White stepped up to spare Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s blushes with a tap-in at the far post.

It was White’s return to the squad following a previous exile under Gareth Southgate. Having entered the pitch to a chorus of boos, White looked to make amends with his poacher’s finish that looked to edge the contest.

However, White was then on the wrong end of a stoppage-time penalty decision as he was adjudged to have fouled Federico Vinas in the box. Fede Valverde stepped up and slotted the spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Still, for White it’s a positive boost for him to be back in the Three Lions fold under new management. Of course he was going to have a say in a game where all the focus was on Bielsa.

As you’d expect, Bielsa took a quick moment during last night to reunite with White after the pair helped Leeds to promotion and the Championship title back in 19/20.

White always had the talent to get where he is as a £50million Arsenal player. However, he’ll no doubt agree that the Argentine gave his career an almighty boost towards Premier League standard.

Bielsa was asked after full-time about his relationship with White and their catch-up at Wembley.

“Obviously I’ve known him for a very long time. I was just very happy to see him and I’m very happy to see how he has developed in his career,” Bielsa explained, per the Metro.

“I saw him as he was sitting there and it was an opportunity to see him and say hello.”

Wholesome evening of Leeds United, Marcelo Bielsa nostalgia at Wembley

It was a largely uneventful game last night. So, all of the focus has understandably been on Bielsa and the Leeds fanbase.

It’s great to see him back in the country and his side gave a relatively decent account of themselves. Given the gulf in quality and depth, a draw is positive.

Seeing White in the England squad, and scoring, will have no doubt brought a smile to Bielsa’s face. Even if it came against his Uruguay.
