Man United icon Roy Keane has paid an emotional tribute to his late mum Marie on social media.

Roy Keane has turned to social media to deliver a heartfelt tribute to his mum following her sad death earlier this week. Marie passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved ones at Marymount Hospice.

A notice on RIP.ie confirmed the news on Friday, stating she will be "sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, her great neighbours and friends."

Roy maintained a close bond with his mother and frequently made the journey home to visit her.

He posted a photograph of the pair together during one such trip, declaring she was 'the only boss he'd listen to.'

He echoed that sentiment on social media on Saturday evening, captioning a photo: "You'll always be the boss."

David Beckham was among the former United legends to offer a message of condolence for Keane, responding with a love heart emoji, alongside Gary Neville.

Keane's former international colleague Robbie Keane was among those to send their sympathies, responding with a loveheart emoji and a prayer emoji.

Keane had been scheduled to work as a pundit on ITV for England's friendly with Uruguay at Wembley Stadium on Friday night, but was withdrawn.

Presenter Mark Pougatch took a moment to extend his heartfelt condolences to Keane ahead of kick-off.

He said: "Everyone here and all of us at ITV sends our condolences to Roy and his family on the sad passing of his mother Marie.

"All of our thoughts are with the Keane family this evening."

Keane's schoolboy club in Cork, Rockmount AFC, were among the first to offer their condolences.

They said: "Sincere condolences to extended Keane and Lynch family on the passing of Marie."
