‘Great leader’: David Beckham’s verdict on ‘top manager’ who was linked with Man Utd role amid Carrick’s reign

Sir David Beckham has explained why he thinks so highly of England manager Thomas Tuchel amid Michael Carrick’s Manchester United interim head coach spell.

Thomas Tuchel has been linked with Manchester United in the past and the 52-year-old German had been tipped as a potential candidate once again in recent months.

The Three Lions manager had been tipped as one potential candidate for the vacant United manager role at Old Trafford after Ruben Amorim was sacked by the club.

Michael Carrick was appointed as interim boss back in January and the 44-year-old United legend has become one of the favourites to land the role permanently.

Why England legend Sir David Beckham is a big fan of Thomas Tuchel amid the Three Lions manager’s Man Utd ‘decision’

Manchester United fans’ hopes of landing Thomas Tuchel on a free this summer took a major hit after the former Chelsea manager inked a new contract with England.

Tuchel had signed his initial deal with England in 2025 after he succeeded Sir Gareth Southgate and would have seen his contract expire at the end of the World Cup.

Amid Man Utd being linked with Tuchel, the Football Association (FA) handed him a contract extension in February and the Three Lions boss will now stay until 2028.

Speaking to talkSPORT, former England captain Sir David Beckham was full of high praise for Man Utd-linked Tuchel amid the Three Lions’ March international break.

“Obviously, he’s a great leader, and I think Thomas is so meticulous with how he picks the squad, how he runs the squad,” he said.

“He’s obviously had past success in the game, but I think that what he brings is how meticulous he will be with every single detail that the England team actually need to perform in this World Cup.”

What Man Utd legend David Beckham really admires about Thomas Tuchel ahead of England’s 2026 World Cup campaign

Michael Carrick’s impact at Man Utd has seen the likes of Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo being called back up to the England national team for the March break.

Tuchel oversaw a 1-1 draw for England against Uruguay in an international friendly match at Wembley on Friday ahead of the Three Lions’ encounter with Japan.

Former United superstar Beckham believes that a “top manager” like Tuchel has shown his elite qualities through his approach to management with the Three Lions.

“I think the players will respond to him because he is a top manager, and I think the way he handles the players, the players will respect, and I think they will react in the right way,” he added.

England will host Japan at Wembley on Tuesday for their final friendly match of the March international break, with kick-off slated for 7:45pm UK time.
