Popular sports pundit Shannon Sharpe held nothing back when discussing his feelings on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future. The Milwaukee Bucks co-owners have confirmed they will look to trade Antetokounmpo this offseason if he doesn’t extend his contract with one season left on it. Sharpe commented on the disagreements between Giannis and the Bucks about him returning this season.
The following comment from Sharpe originated on his Nightcap YouTube talk show:
“That’s a car, I know I want to get rid of it. I wanna park it. I will have it cleaned up, and I’m gonna sit it in the garage. Y’all come look at it if you want it. Cuz the more I drive it, the more chances somebody running into me. Or I’m not paying attention to, and somebody run and I run into somebody, now I decrease the value of it.”
Sharpe used the wild comparison to explain why he’s siding with Milwaukee in their desire for Antetokounmpo to sit out for the rest of the season. The Bucks have nothing to play for and hope to keep Giannis safe after his most recent injury scare. Sharpe used a comical point to declare why he’s on Milwaukee’s side when comparing Antetokounmpo to a car.
Did Sharpe Disrespect Giannis With This Comment?
Fans took exception to Sharpe comparing Giannis to an old car in the garage since he’s one of the best players in the league. Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP and former NBA Champion, but it has been years since he’s accomplished either of these accolades.
Injuries have ruined the Bucks’ chances of success over the past few seasons. Trades for Damian Lillard, Kyle Kuzma, and Myles Turner at various points did not get them over the hump. Giannis’ health woes impacted each season to lower the ceiling since Milwaukee struggles to win without him.
Sharpe is known for making comedic comments and playing up his sense of humor in the world of sports takes. The quote from Sharpe goes more into why he is taking the Bucks’ side more than he is mocking Antetokounmpo. However, the average fan should know Giannis is more valuable than a random old car for sale.
Giannis Trade Rumors Picking Back Up Steam
The trade deadline showed both Giannis and the Bucks getting on the same page to end the season together. Most blockbuster trades come in the offseason since more teams are looking to contend and willing to take a big risk on switching up the roster.
Teams like the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, and Golden State Warriors have already shown interest with more reports coming. Other teams getting eliminated in the playoffs will likely want to enter the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes to add a top five player.
Sharpe is right about why the Bucks don’t want to play Giannis this season and how important the offseason trade will be. Milwaukee must hit a home run to either get young prospects or upcoming draft picks for any chances at rebuilding. Too many trades in recent years have limited their own assets while trying to appease Antetokounmpo.
