Manchester United defender Harry Maguire will have been left frustrated after hearing the latest comments from Thomas Tuchel.
England shared spoils with Uruguay in a recent international friendly.
Maguire marked his return to the national setup after an impressive run of form under Michael Carrick at United.
The centre-back was arguably England’s standout performer against the South Americans, underlining his case for a place in the upcoming World Cup squad.
However, Tuchel has other opinions. He described him as a “weapon” but followed it up with a brutally honest assessment.
The England manager revealed that Maguire is currently viewed as no higher than fifth-choice in the centre-back pecking order.
He said (via Daily Mail): “I haven’t changed my mind (on Maguire) but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile.
“I see Ezri Konsa ahead. I see Marc Guehi ahead. It’s no secret. I see Trevoh Chalobah, on the level of mobility, was slightly ahead of him. Also John Stones, but he had injuries so he (Maguire) needed to come in camp.”
Thomas Tuchel needs a reality check
Maguire is in fantastic form and could be a valuable asset for this England squad.
While Guehi may be the first-choice centre-back, Maguire could prove to be the perfect partner alongside him.
The 33-year-old remains one of the most aerially dominant defenders in European football.
Although he may not consistently play incisive forward passes, he possesses the range to deliver accurate long balls to wide players.
Inside the penalty area, he is a commanding presence and a constant threat during set-pieces.
The drab draw with Uruguay was proof that Tuchel has yet to unlock the full potential of the England side.
Maguire has played several major tournaments for the Three Lions and could bring priceless experience.
Leaving him out of the World Cup squad would be a huge gamble and a potentially costly mistake.
Maguire will be seriously worried about his chances of being part of the 2026 World Cup.
