Man Utd were beaten to Argentina wonderkid Aaron Anselmino, now he is enduring 11-minute nightmare

Manchester United were heavily linked with Aaron Anselmino when he was at Boca Juniors, but he ended up joining Chelsea instead.

The links to Aaron Anselmino started in 2024 when Manchester United were looking to add youth to their defensive department.

However, Chelsea signed Anselmino for £15m after winning the race for his signature. Aaron Anselmino was sent back to Boca Juniors on loan and then went on loan to Borussia Dortmund for the 2025/26 season.

Despite some injury problems, Anselmino was making good progress in Germany. But he was recalled by Chelsea in January and his career has quickly started to spiral.

Aaron Anselmino’s career is struggling

Between two separate injury issues, Anselmino made 10 appearances for Dortmund and was enjoying his football at the German side.

As pointed out by Footyemporium, Anselmino left Dortmund in tears when he was recalled by Chelsea due to a lack of defenders at Stamford Bridge.

But new Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior completely overlooked Anselmino and he ended up joining sister club Strasbourg on loan in January.

At the French club, Anselmino has played a total of 11 minutes of football and is struggling to carve out first-team opportunities for himself.

Now at 20 years old, he is dropping down the pecking order in France and is set to return to Chelsea in the summer.

Aaron Anselmino might regret not joining Man Utd

With United missing out on Anselmino in 2024, Ineos still went and added youth to United’s defence through the signing of Leny Yoro.

The £1 million signing of Ayden Heaven then followed in January, and now both young defenders are looking at a very promising career ahead of them at Old Trafford.

Ineos are prioritising making Yoro and Heaven starters in the long-term, and Anselmino could have been in that position had he chosen to join United instead of Chelsea.

The promising Argentine defender could have learned from World Cup winner Lisandro Martinez at the Theatre of Dreams.

Instead, he finds himself sitting on the bench at Strasbourg.
