David Beckham has hailed Michael Carrick for bringing a calming presence to Manchester United - something he believes has been missing for a decade. Carrick has won seven of his 10 matches since becoming interim manager in January and has put together a strong case to become full-time boss this summer.

United were in turmoil when Ruben Amorim was sacked at the start of 2026, with the team sitting sixth in the Premier League. Carrick has lost just once so far, taking 23 points from a possible 30 in the league to move the side up to third as they look to secure a place in next season's Champions League.

The ex-midfielder has made a brilliant impression on the players and his impact is such that director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada are yet to hold talks with candidates for the full-time role. Carrick's chances of landing the job are strengthened with every result and Beckham has become the latest prominent former player to sing his praises.

“Yeah, I must admit, the last few months have been a lot more comfortable than the last 10 years, to be honest. It’s been tough over that time," Beckham said when asked on talkSPORT if he'd been surprised by how well Carrick had done.

“But I think Michael’s got experience. I think he’s got a calmness about him that he’s brought into the club. He knows the club. He knows the players. He knows the way Man United play and the way Man United should play.

“And I’ve always liked Michael as a coach. You know, when you look at him, there’s a calmness. There’s, on the side of the pitch, there’s, I don’t want to say elegance because I’m not sure that’s the right thing to say, but there’s an elegance in the way he is, whether it’s the way he celebrates, whether it’s the way he gets angry.

“You know, all of those things are important in a manager. And I think that the way he’s got the team and brought the team together has been, has been incredible. And I think as a United fan, it’s exactly what we needed.”

Carrick has continually batted away questions about landing the job on a full-time basis and is focused on the remaining seven Premier League games. United have a six-point buffer to Liverpool in fifth place, and with no other competitions to worry about, are strong favourites to finish in the top four.

United's hierarchy appointed Carrick on a contract until the end of the season and always planned to wait to decide on a long-term successor to Amorim. The club have been linked with Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Roberto De Zerbi, formerly of Marseille, as well as ex-England manager Gareth Southgate, but Carrick is undoubtedly the favourite.
