'United fan, too': Julien Laurens discusses reports Bayern and Real Madrid want 'frustrated' Cole Palmer

Reports have emerged on Sunday that Cole Palmer is being eyed by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, as well as Manchester United, and journalist Julien Laurens has given his verdict.

Palmer, 23, is currently with the England squad as Thomas Tuchel prepares his side to take on Japan in the second of two international friendlies. The final game before Tuchel picks his squad for the World Cup.

But at club level, Palmer has endured a frustrating season both personally and as a player in a struggling Chelsea side. Dean Jones recently said Palmer is ‘annoyed’ at the moment, but for many reasons.

The England star is struggling with a groin issue, one he can play with but not at 100%. But many times, Liam Rosenior has said Chelsea are looking after him. Alan Shearer described it as a “horrible situation”.

Palmer has often shown his frustration on the pitch, not just with Chelsea’s form but his own, and the injury is clearly affecting that. It has been reported that Palmer is a target for Man United.

Julien Laurens discusses new Cole Palmer reports

A report from The Sun on Sunday claims that Palmer is ‘frustrated’ at Chelsea and wants to leave the club. It is claimed Man United have been joined by Real Madrid and Bayern in pursuit of the £150m-rated ace.

But on Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement, Laurens was quick to reassure Chelsea fans. He said that even if Palmer wanted to leave, which is “likely”, none of the mentioned clubs would be able to afford Palmer.

“I think it’s likely that he would want to leave Chelsea, for sure. The project worked for him when he arrived, in terms of having that game time in the Premier League and establishing himself,” Laurens said.

“But the Chelsea project is not going in the right direction. I’m sure Man United is very appealing, very attractive, United fan too. That can work. Real Madrid? They can’t even find a space for Jude Bellingham.

“They’re not going to find a space for Palmer. The same for Bayern, who have Musiala as a 10. Gnabry, Karl, there is no space for Palmer. They wouldn’t spend that kind of money because [Bayern] don’t have it.

“There might be teams that like him, managers that fancy him. But financially, there aren’t many clubs that could sign him. I’m not even sure Manchester United could spend £150m on him in the summer.

“So that might be the best answer of what is next for Cole Palmer. Because if that’s the price, there is nobody right now who would be able to sign him,” Laurens continued on reports emerging on Palmer.

Thomas Tuchel has advice for Liam Rosenior regarding Palmer

On Friday night, England came within an inch of beating Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay at Wembley, but were denied late on as Federico Valverde cancelled out Chelsea transfer target Ben White’s goal on his return.

Palmer was a second-half substitute and ultimately changed the game. It was a Palmer free-kick that led to the best chance of the game, Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin somehow heading the ball wide.

Then, it was a Palmer corner that led to White’s goal. Tuchel used Palmer in the 10 role and before the 1- 1 draw, he said Palmer’s best role is as a 10: “There is big competition for his best position, No10.”

Rosenior is under pressure to incorporate all of his best players; he has been using the former Man City star as a right-sided winger. Perhaps Rosenior needs to listen to Tuchel to get the best out of Palmer.
