Coach Steve Kerr is in the final year of his contract with the Golden State Warriors, but it seems like Steph Curry has a lot of say about his future. A Warriors insider has shared the latest scoop on Kerr possibly staying in the Bay Area after this season.

One of the biggest talking points for the Warriors before the season was Kerr’s expiring contract. The four-time NBA champion coach decided to wait until this summer to decide whether he’s going to stay or not.

“I’m very comfortable going into the season with a year left,” Kerr told ESPN’s Anthony Slater back in October. “I’m so aligned with (general manager) Mike (Dunleavy) and (owner) Joe (Lacob). We talked about this. There’s no reason for discussion or concern. This is kind of a point in our relationship where let’s just see how it is at the end of the year.”

Kerr added that he’s hoping to coach the Warriors for another few years, as long as it makes sense for the franchise. He previously signed a two-year, $35 million extension midway through the 2023-24 NBA season.

Curry’s Role in Kerr’s Future

Speaking on the Warriors Plus Minus podcast, team insider Marcus Thompson shared some information about Kerr’s status in Golden State. Thompson revealed that it will all come down to Curry, who wants him to stay in what could be their final run together.

“Stephen Curry wants Steve Kerr,” Thompson said, via HoopsHype. “I’ve been asked repeatedly. Do you think Steve’s coming back? I absolutely do because I think this team, especially because of what we’ve been talking about now tonight on this episode, they want to go for it.”

Thompson added, “There’s not another person you’re going to plug in that’s going to take them to some other spot more than Steve Kerr. Plus the fact that Steph wants him and they have a partnership for all these years.”

Curry and Kerr have won four NBA championships together. While Mark Jackson is credited with helping Curry develop into a superstar, Kerr guided him through the Warriors’ dynasty, alongside Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala.

Another member of that dynasty was former president and general manager Bob Myers, who left the franchise after the 2022-23 NBA season.

Curry’s Possible Return Date

It has been nearly two months since Curry stepped on the court. He has been nursing a runner’s knee since the end of January, but the Warriors were still able to qualify for the NBA Play-In Tournament.

But when will Curry return to the Warriors’ lineup? According to Danny Emerman of The San Francisco Standard, the greatest shooter ever could target a return next week.

“If Curry gets a couple of live practices in over the next week, it’s possible he could return by the Rockets game on Sunday, April 5 at Chase Center,” Emerman wrote. That could give him three or four games leading into the play-in tournament.”

Since Curry went down with a knee injury, the Warriors are just 9-15. They have eight games remaining in the regular season before the NBA Play-In Tournament.
