NFL Expert: Chiefs Need to Make This Trade to Address Major Weakness

The Kansas City Chiefs are being urged to consider a bold move to address a key defensive concern ahead of the 2026 season. One proposed solution involves trading for Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.

Kansas City’s secondary has shown inconsistency, particularly when facing high-powered passing offenses. Strengthening the cornerback position has become a priority as the team looks to maintain its status among the league’s top contenders.

Stevenson has emerged as a physical and competitive defender with the ability to match up against top receivers. His aggressive style and willingness to challenge routes make him an appealing option for a defense seeking more reliability on the outside.

For the Chiefs, acquiring Stevenson could provide an immediate upgrade in coverage while adding toughness to the secondary. His presence would allow greater flexibility in defensive schemes and help limit explosive plays.

Kansas City may get to resolve a major weakness by acquiring Stevenson during the NFL offseason. This is detailed more in an analysis by Moe Moton for Bleacher Report.

This offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs lost two of their primary starting cornerbacks from the previous year. They traded All-Pro Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams and allowed Jaylen Watson to walk; he also signed with the Rams.

Because of those key departures, the Chiefs’ cornerback room needs help. Kansas City may be able to land Tyrique Stevenson in a deal with the Chicago Bears.

Stevenson is entering the final year of his rookie deal. So, the Bears could consider trading the talented cover man if they don’t plan to sign him to an extension before he hits free agency in 2027.

After allowing nine touchdowns in his rookie campaign, Stevenson made strides in some areas of coverage, giving up five scores and a passer rating below 88 over the last two terms.

The Bears, however, would need to evaluate the implications of moving a young defensive piece with upside. Any potential deal would depend on compensation and how it aligns with Chicago’s long-term plans.

As the offseason progresses, Kansas City continues to explore ways to strengthen its roster. Addressing the cornerback position could prove critical in sustaining the team’s competitive edge heading into the new season.
