Marc Cuban advocates for a radical proposal to boost ratings

Mark Cuban proposed reducing NBA game length to 40 minutes as an alternative to shortening the 82-game season. He argues this would decrease player workload without violating arena leases, citing success in college and international play while potentially boosting television ratings.

Former majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks Marc Cuban likes to occasionally publish his takes related to basketball on his X account.

This time, Cuban responded to Bill Simmons and the proposals on how to avoid the teams intentionally tanking.

Simmons asked how none of the proposals by the NBA included potentially shortening the season from the current 82 games.

Cuban proposed an interesting idea that would reduce the workload of the players, whilst still keeping the 82-game format:

"Make the games 40 minutes. 8 x 82 / 48 =13.667 That’s the equivalent number of games you would reduce the schedule by. Without breaking arena leases," Cuban started.

"Works for college. Works for international. Works for the WNBA, and if you looking at tv and streaming ratings, the less the actual playing time for a televised game, the bigger the ratings."

"The less time fans have to focus on a game, the more they enjoy watching it on tv," he concluded.
