Jimmy Butler of the Golden State Warriors suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Jimmy Butler continues to show signs of engagement during his rehabilitation, with a new video offering a glimpse into the Golden State Warriors forward’s recovery more than a month after ACL surgery.
In a clip shared on Instagram, Butler is seen learning the “surf” celebration from Melanie Barcenas of San Diego FC following the club’s 2-0 win over the Chicago Stars on Saturday. Barcenas scored in the 72nd minute before demonstrating the celebration as Butler followed along from his seat.
The video showed Butler moving comfortably as he continues early-stage recovery from ACL surgery, providing a visual update on his condition while he remains sidelined.
Video Offers Snapshot of Butler’s Recovery Stage
While the clip is informal, it aligns with the steady, early phase of Butler’s rehabilitation timeline.
The 36-year-old suffered a torn ACL on Jan. 19 in a win over the Miami Heat and underwent surgery on Feb. 9, an injury that ended his 2025–26 season.
Players returning from ACL injuries typically require an extended recovery period, often close to a year, before returning to full competitive form. The video does not indicate a timeline shift but does provide a look at Butler’s current mobility and activity level.
Butler Shares Optimistic Outlook on Recovery
Butler has expressed a positive mindset as he begins the rehabilitation process.
Speaking earlier this month, as reported by Nick Friedell of The Athletic, Butler said he remains encouraged despite the challenges of being sidelined.
“But all in all, I’m good, man. Happy,” Butler said.
He acknowledged the difficulty of being away from the team but emphasized his focus on progress.
“Not being around my guys — hard. Not being able to play the game that I love… But the rehab has been going,” Butler said.
Butler added that he is approaching recovery with a competitive mindset.
“Everything we do in rehab is about competing… It’s competing to see whether you can be better than you were yesterday.”
Warriors Expect Midseason Return Timeline
Golden State coach Steve Kerr recently provided context on Butler’s expected timeline.
Kerr grouped Butler with teammate Moses Moody, who is also recovering from a major injury, and indicated neither is expected to return early next season.
“Hopefully those guys will be back next season, midseason or so,” Kerr said.
That projection is consistent with typical ACL recovery timelines, which often extend into the following season before players return to peak performance.
Cross-Sport Moment Highlights Engagement
Butler’s appearance at the San Diego FC match also reflects his continued engagement during recovery. The six-time NBA All-Star is a minority investor in San Diego Wave FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, a role he took on in October 2025.
He attended the game with his family and remained involved in the moment, interacting with Barcenas following her goal and celebration.
The exchange offered a rare crossover between basketball and soccer, while also illustrating Butler’s effort to stay connected to competitive environments.
Long-Term Focus Remains on Full Recovery
Despite the upbeat tone of the video, Butler’s return remains a long-term process.
ACL injuries require not only surgical repair but also extensive rehabilitation to restore strength, stability and confidence. For Butler, whose game relies heavily on physicality and defensive intensity, that process will be critical.
He has not set a firm timeline for his return, but has made clear that his priority is coming back at full strength.
“I do want to come back… whenever my body’s ready,” Butler said.
Looking Ahead for Warriors
For the Warriors, Butler’s absence has been part of a broader stretch impacted by injuries across the roster.
While the team continues to navigate the remainder of the season, Butler’s recovery remains focused on next year and beyond.
The video provides a brief but meaningful look at his current stage — active, engaged and progressing through the early phases of rehabilitation — as he works toward his eventual return.
