The Golden State Warriors are once again at the center of speculation involving a potential Stephen Curry–LeBron James pairing, with new reporting suggesting the scenario carries legitimate traction around the league.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Warriors are widely viewed by rival teams as one of the few credible destinations for James if he departs the Los Angeles Lakers.
“It has some legs,” one league source told Stein regarding the potential connection.
League Executives Continue to Link Warriors to James

The idea of James joining Golden State has circulated for years, but recent reporting suggests it is being taken more seriously.
According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, league executives continue to identify the Warriors as a leading potential destination.
“The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors were, and are, often mentioned by league executives as his most likely destinations,” Amick wrote last week.
Amick wrote that shifting dynamics in Los Angeles — including the Lakers’ commitment to Luka Doncic and the emergence of Austin Reaves — have contributed to the growing belief that James could explore other options.
Warriors Financial Path Exists — but Requires Maneuvering
While the fit is intriguing, the financial path to acquiring James remains complex.
Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard outlined a potential scenario in which the Warriors could pursue James through free agency.
That approach would likely require the team to drop below the luxury tax threshold in order to access the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, projected to be around $15 million.
Such a move would likely require James to accept a reduced salary, a significant factor in any potential deal.
“The LeBron/Warriors rumors have percolated for years. Same financial story: He’d likely have to take a pay cut down to $15 million to consider the Warriors,” Kawakami wrote.
Kawakami also detailed how the Warriors could attempt to retain key pieces — including Draymond Green — while creating enough flexibility to add a star without dismantling the roster.
Warriors Sign-and-Trade Presents Additional Challenges
A sign-and-trade with the Lakers remains another theoretical option, but it presents complications.
Any such deal would likely require the Warriors to part with core players, including Jimmy Butler, Green or Kristaps Porzingis, a scenario that may not align with the team’s priorities.
“The Warriors and Lakers could also work a sign-and-trade deal, which would elevate LeBron’s salary, but that would take trading either Butler, Draymond, or Porzingis to the Lakers, and I don’t think that’s workable for anybody,” Kawakami wrote.
As a result, league observers view a direct signing — despite its challenges — as the more realistic path.
Familiarity Could Play a Role
Beyond roster construction, the appeal of Golden State includes established relationships.
James has long-standing ties with Stephen Curry and Green, and recently played alongside them under coach Steve Kerr during Team USA’s gold medal run.
Those connections have fueled speculation that a late-career pairing could be mutually appealing.
Scenario Gaining Credibility
While multiple outcomes remain possible — including a return to the Lakers or retirement — the consistency of reporting linking James to the Warriors has added credibility to the scenario.
What was once viewed as unlikely is now being discussed as a viable possibility within league circles.
As Stein noted, the idea that James could land in Golden State may still be developing, but it is no longer being dismissed.
