Prospects for George Kittle playing a full 2026 season are brighter than they initially appeared when he went down with a torn Achilles in the San Francisco 49ers' wild-card win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
General manager John Lynch told reporters Sunday the tight end is progressing well and the team is "hopeful" he can be available for Week 1, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
Such a speedy return would put Kittle roughly eight months post-injury when the Niners take on the Los Angeles Rams in Australia on Thursday, Sept. 10.
It remains to be seen how effective he would be coming back so soon entering his age-33 season, but if he hits that target or even comes close to it, San Francisco would benefit greatly in its mission to wrest back control of the NFC West.
Kittle led all tight ends and wide receivers on the 49ers last year with 57 receptions, which he turned into 628 yards and seven touchdowns. Together with free-agent addition Mike Evans, he can provide a big-bodied, one-two punch for quarterback Brock Purdy.

Considering how ravaged by injuries San Francisco was with injuries last season, Lynch had plenty of return dates to update beyond Kittle.
He also told reporters he expects pass rushers Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams, both coming off torn ACLs, to be ready for training camp in some capacity, although Williams suffered his injury later in the season and could take longer to be full-go.
Left tackle Trent Williams, too, has questions regarding his return, albeit due to contract concerns rather than injury. The 12-time Pro Bowler currently has a $46.3 million cap number for 2026, a massive hurdle the sides must deal with if he's to remain a Niner, but Lynch said talks have "intensified" in the past week and San Francisco and Williams could be on the precipice of a positive contract development.
Nothing is set in stone at this point -- neither the recovery windows nor a solution to Williams' current contract -- but there appears to be positive news on all fronts for the 49ers heading into April.
