Rams could land heir apparent to Matthew Stafford in 2026 NFL Draft

The Los Angeles Rams are not a team with many needs this offseason.

In fact, the Rams may have one of the best rosters in the league, and are definitely considered a Super Bowl contender in 2026. While there aren't many holes on the roster, there is a glaring one of the offensive side of the ball- backup quarterback.

Currently, Stetson Bennett IV is the only quarterback on the roster behind Matthew Stafford. Bennett has never appeared in a regular season game, and Jimmy Garoppolo, who was the backup in 2025, is still unsigned.

Stafford is still playing at an elite level, fresh off his first MVP Award in 2025, and his third Pro Bowl selection. However, he just turned 38, so the team needs to find a long-term answer.

Moe Moton of Bleacher Report recently identified the best landing spots for Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson in 2026. One of these spots is the Rams, who, as mentioned above, need a long-term signal-caller.

Regarding Simpson and the Rams, Moton offered the following:

You can make the case that the Rams' biggest roster need is a backup quarterback. So, it's not a stretch for them to strengthen that position with the No. 13 overall pick.

Instead of taking a prospect who would likely play in a rotational role on a stacked roster, Los Angeles can invest premium capital in Stafford's potential successor.

With Ty Simpson's limited starting experience, he can learn a lot from Stafford, the reigning MVP and an elite player who led his team to a Super Bowl title.

As Moton mentioned, the Rams would probably be better off investing in Stafford's successor than adding a rotational player to a stacked roster.

In 2025, Simpson played in 15 games for the Crimson Tide and threw for 3,567 yards with 28 touchdowns and just five interceptions. The quarterback led the SEC in pass attempts and completions, showing he's not afraid to air it out.

A tough passer from the SEC with a big arm, who's not mobile, but not a complete statue either? Sounds kind of like Stafford. There's reason to believe Simpson would thrive in Los Angeles learning from the veteran passer and Sean McVay, one of the best offensive minds in the game.

There is some concern about Simpson only having one year of starting experience in college. However, this is exactly why the Rams are a perfect fit. Stafford is obviously starting in 2026, so Simpson would have at least one full year to sit and learn from one of the best in the game.
