Steve Kerr described the Golden State Warriors as a 'fading dynasty' but recent trade rumors could give them one more shot at a title run.

The Golden State Warriors are expected to make big moves this summer if opposing teams are right about their fears. Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler’s injuries doomed this season from having any real contention for an NBA Championship, but the hope is now to improve for greater success next season. Golden State will be active on the free agent market and trade block with the hopes of contending again in Curry’s final year.

Tim Kawakami reported the following news about other teams and their feelings on the Warriors:

“The league, I think, isn’t concerned that they’re going to go win another title, but they are concerned that they are going to load up like crazy going into next season. I’m saying Kawhi Leonard, LeBron James.

There are complications with both. But you’ve heard it, I’ve heard it. There is conversation. I’m not saying from the league. I’m just saying, Kawhi’s contract gonna get voided, theoretically. We don’t know.

That seems to be the number one thing you hear with some other obviously punishment for the Clippers. He could be a free agent. He might not be able to get a max salary is what I’m saying.”

The quote claims that LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard are the “big fish” targets from the Warriors under the hope of contending again. Curry playing with another one of the top legends from his era could boost the team’s success.

Golden State’s Contract Situation Could Hurt Them

Golden State made sure to lock up their three best players to similar contracts. Curry, Butler, and Draymond Green are all under contract until the summer of 2027. Moses Moody is the only other name secured to a long-term contract and making noteworthy money.

Both Butler and Moody potentially missing a solid percentage of next season could see the Warriors trying to trade them in the offseason. Free agent Kristaps Porzingis is reportedly expected to return since both parties hope to keep him under contract.

However, this means they’ll have limited cap space unless they can trade away contracts or add free agents via sign and trades. LeBron is expected to take a pay cut for his final season(s), but he has a better chance of contention elsewhere. Leonard will need the unlikely scenario of his contract being voided and wanting a new NBA home.

Warriors Must Figure Out Steve Kerr Problem First

The Warriors will have a lot to get done this upcoming offseason after a difficult year. Head coach Steve Kerr has yet to sign an extension and could easily opt to retire or leave coaching for a stress-free life.

All signs indicate that Golden State wants to keep Kerr, especially after Curry made it clear he fully wants his longtime coach to return. The Warriors must figure out an extension or replacement before free agency starts.

Kerr has helped recruit stars in the past and shows that players around the league enjoy playing for him. The ideal Golden State game plan would be to bring Kerr back, add a new star, retain Porzingis, and get Butler back healthy for next season. However, it remains a long shot for all these to easily happen.
