Sell him before Trossard: Arsenal must finally axe £45m flop who's the new Zinchenko - opinion

Arsenal's squad has been heralded as not just the best in the country this season but the best in Europe too. It's hard to dispute that claim to be totally honest.

The Gunners are top of the English top-flight and ended the first phase of the Champions League sat top of the standings.

They are in the driver's seat to win the Premier League and it would not be a surprise if Mikel Arteta's men made the semi-finals in Europe, at the very least.

That said, this squad is not perfect. It's certainly not firing on all cylinders and changes could be afoot come the summer transfer window.

That doesn't just mean signing new players, but also means clearing out some dead wood. Leandro Trossard is unfortuantely one of them.

Why Arsenal need to sell Leandro Trossard

The Belgian has been a mighty fine signing since arriving in January 2023 from Brighton and Hove Albion for a fee of just £27m.

Trossard was not Arsenal's first choice that winter, notably courting Mykhailo Mudryk for a long period of time, but when the Ukrainian speedster chose Chelsea instead, the Gunners needed to pivot.

They pivoted to Trossard and ultimately ended up having the last laugh. During the back end of 2022/23, he proved to be one of Arsenal's best players, registering ten goal involvements (1 goal, 9 assists) in 20 outings.

Since then, he's not been quite as prolific but he's still produced some clutch moments in an Arsenal shirt. A super sub, the man for the big occasion, the winger has demonstrated exactly why Arteta rates him so highly. There was that lovely goal against Porto in the Champions League and an equaliser against Bayern Munich back in 2023/24.

However, after finding the net on 17 occasions in that campaign, he has struggled to replicate those performances, even if he did start 2025/26 like a house on fire.

Arsenal made the controversial decision to give him a pay rise last summer and while his deal was not extended, it spoke volumes about how highly the club valued him.

He repaid that in spades by scoring eight times and registering six assists in his first 22 matches of this season. However, the winger has now not found the net in 17 straight games.

A pillar of inconsistency in 2026, now feels like precisely the time to cash in on an ageing player. However, he's not the only one that fits into that boat.

Arsenal must sell their new Oleksandr Zinchenko

When Oleksandr Zinchenko signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2022, it changed the culture and the landscape of the club.

It's not often a left-back does that, but it revolutionised the way in which Arteta could play. He went from a flying full-back in the shape of Kieran Tierney to perhaps one of the best inverted defenders we've seen in the Premier League.

Zinchenko's ability to tuck inside in possession was a real game-changer for Arsenal's build-up play but unfortunately, his time at the Emirates Stadium was ultimately brought to an end courtesy of persistent injuries and poor defensive performances. He left in January, joining former club Ajax.

Arsenal's most expensive signings of all time

The Gunners have spent generously in recent years.

That same summer, Arsenal also welcomed Gabriel Jesus to the club from Manchester City and alongside Zinchenko, he changed the game.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang no longer at the club, the Londoners needed a new striker and they found one in the shape of Jesus, who, similarly to Trossard, started his career in the English capital like a man possessed.

Jesus' movement was extraordinarily good and his ability to retain possession and create something out of nothing was a joy to behold. Think of a classic Brazilian footballer and that's what Jesus was like in the opening months of his time in red and white.

In his first 12 Premier League games for Arsenal, the centre-forward scored five goals and supplied six assists. Yet, despite a hat-trick against Crystal Palace last term, that's about as good as it's got for him in London.

Whether it be through injury or inconsistent performances, Jesus hasn't been able to match the levels of 2022/23. Of course, there was that horrendous ACL injury that kept him out for much of 2025, but much like Zinchenko, the Brazil international is now past his best.

While the striker did find the net twice against Inter Milan in the Champions League this season, he is now scarcely seen for his club. Arteta has not selected Jesus in any of the last four Premier League matches, a fact that only rubber stamps his lack of importance.

It's time for Arsenal to cut their losses and let him go this summer. He's wanted back in his homeland by Palmeiras but where the forward's future lies remains to be seen. Either way, these final few months of the ongoing season must be his last at the Emirates.
