Eagles take chance on former first-round pick to bolster key position

**PHOENIX, Ariz. —** [Eagles general manager Howie Roseman](https://www.nj.com/eagles/2026/02/how-eagles-howie-roseman-could-exploit-this-proposed-nfl-rule.html) announced on Sunday at the NFL’s annual league meeting that the team signed [edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka](https://go.skimresources.com?id=126006X1587338&xs=1&xcust=cayden-steele%7C&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.espn.com%2Fnfl%2Fplayer%2F_%2Fid%2F4243333%2Fjoe-tryon-shoyinka&product_category=Sporting+Goods%3EAthletics%3EAmerican+Football) to a one-year contract.

Tryon-Shoyinka, who was drafted by the Buccaneers in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has never lived up to his potential as a top pass rusher, only recording 15.5 sacks during his first five seasons. He’s coming off his worst year in 2025, finishing with zero sacks in 16 games.

Roseman likes to bet on former first-round picks who have struggled in the NFL, hoping a new coaching staff and scheme could unlock their talent. Tryon-Shoyinka won’t be expected to make a big impact, but if some reason he does break out in Philadelphia, it would be a great low-risk signing,

If Tryon-Shoyinka doesn’t perform well during training camp, he could be released during final roster cuts. Roseman will draft or trade for another edge rusher who can help anchor Philadelphia’s pass rush in 2026 and beyond.

At best, Tryon-Shoyinka will likely be the team’s No. 5 edge rusher behind Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, Arnold Ebiketie and a player not on the roster yet. If the Eagles ask Brandon Graham to come back for another season, Tryon-Shoyinka could be the odd man out — unless the team keeps six edge rushers on the 53-man roster.

Tryon-Shoyinka played for the Browns and Bears last season. This could be his last chance to become a meaningful NFL player.
