Tight end George Kittle suffered a significant injury last season in the playoffs. In the 2026 NFC Wild Card Round, the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Kittle suffered a torn Achilles in the game, leaving the team with a lot of questions. It appears the Niners are expecting a quick recovery from the injury, so let’s take a closer look at what the timeline is and what it would mean for the team going forward.

While speaking to the media, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch made a bold claim. He said that tight end George Kittle is progressing well in his rehab and is “hopeful” he can be able to return to the field in Week 1. He had a down season compared to expectations as he finished with 57 receptions on 69 targets for 628 yards (11.0 yards per catch) with seven receiving touchdowns.
He suffered the injury back on Jan. 11, which is exactly 242 days from when Week 1’s game in Australia will be kicking off. This will be something to monitor, but it sounds like he is progressing at an outstanding pace. Compared to players like Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins, Kittle has to run routes, so his recovery is more unique.
There is no need for him to rush back, though, and risk any setbacks, as the team has signed wide receiver Mike Evans to help ease the load. With running back Christian McCaffrey also taking pressure off with his 300+ touches each season, the team is able to absorb waiting on Kittle for longer than other teams are equipped to do. It will be intriguing to see when George Kittle is able to return to the field, if it is at all in the 2026 season.
