Frontrunners: Liverpool now favourites to sign "unreal" £22m star who tore Barcelona apart -…

Liverpool have now emerged as the favourites to sign an Inter Milan star this summer, despite widespread interest from within the Premier League.

Reds looking to strengthen defence amid Kerkez and Frimpong criticism

The Reds were forced to rebuild in the previous summer transfer window, with Trent Alexander-Arnold moving to Real Madrid, and Andy Robertson arguably in the latter stages of his career at 32-years-old.

Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez were brought in to bolster Arne Slot's options on both sides of the defence, but former midfielder Danny Murphy isn't entirely convinced by the new additions, saying earlier this month: "The new signings apart from Ekitike, Wirtz, I know he is out injured, he has had a pickle, but full-back areas, problem.

"Frimpong not as good as Trent, Kerkez can’t do what Robertson could do.

With Frimpong struggling on the injury front, Dominik Szoboszlai has often filled in at right-back, and the Hungarian is enjoying an impressive campaign, having chipped in with 12 goals and eight assists in 43 matches across all competitions.

However, the Reds remain keen on bringing in another attack-minded right-back in the summer transfer window, and they are in a strong position to win the race for a player who is proven at the very highest level.

Liverpool frontrunners to sign "unreal" right-back

According to a report from Italy (via TEAMtalk), Liverpool are now the favourites to sign Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries, who has a bargain release clause of just £22m included in his contract with the Serie A side.

Manchester United and Manchester City are also named as potential suitors for the Dutchman, but Slot's side are the frontrunners, having identified the need to bring in a new right-back, to ensure Szoboszlai can move back into the midfield.

The Merseysiders 'wouldn't have a problem' convincing Dumfries to move to Anfield, and he certainly has the experience to be a success in the Premier League, having put in some top performances during his time with Inter.

Last season, the Netherlands international was particularly impressive across two legs against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, contributing to five goals to put the Spanish side to the sword.

Statman Dave lauded the Inter star as "unreal" for his performances against the La Liga heavyweights, and he has posed a real threat on the front foot throughout his time with the Italian side, amassing 25 goals and 26 assists in 199 matches.

Frimpong, on the other hand, hasn't made the desired impact at Liverpool, at least from an attacking point of view, failing to score and registering just two assists in 15 Premier League outings.

Dumfries is 29-years-old, which is a little older than most players the Reds bring in, but he is available for a relatively low fee, and could be a savvy addition to Slot's squad.
