Chelsea Are‘Monitoring’Lightning Quick Defender Who Has Clocked 35.4 km/h This Season

Chelsea are keeping tabs on Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, according to reports.

TEAMtalk claim that the Blues are “monitoring” the Frenchman, along with Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Lacroix joined Palace from Wolfsburg for £18m at the start of last season, and he quickly established himself as a key figure in the Eagles’ back three.

The centre-back can cover the ground rapidly, having recorded a top speed of 35.4 km/h this campaign, which makes him quicker than any other defender.

Lacroix has also been rewarded for his form with his first cap for France’s senior side, coming on for the final half hour of the 2-1 win over Brazil last week.

Chelsea were first linked with the player 5 years ago

Lacroix was originally identified as a transfer target during the 2021/22 campaign when he was still playing at Wolfsburg.

A lot has happened since then, including the takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, but the scouting department would have seen how he has developed into a competent Premier League centre-half over the last two seasons.

Lacroix could reinforce a key position

It is fair to say that the Blues have had problems in the middle of defence this season, but the issue has been exacerbated since the appointment of Liam Rosenior. 12 goals have been conceded in the last four matches.

Strengthening the club’s options at centre-back will be a priority this summer, especially if players like Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile and even Wesley Fofana are allowed to leave Stamford Bridge.

At 25 years of age, Lacroix would just about fit the profile that the recruitment team are looking for. They have also reportedly considered AC Milan’s Strahinja Pavlovic as a potential alternative.

The Serbian would potentially cost €40m (£35m) so he may end up being cheaper than Lacroix.
